Marc Soler was born in Vilanova on November 22, 1993. In August 2015, at the age of 22, he became the 12th Spaniard to conquer the Tour de l'Avenir . His first professional victory in his debut season at the top level with Movistar came in a race that usually reveal the riders that will domate the future However, Soler remains humble. "I just want to continue my traing and grow gradually in the team," he tells AS.
Soler is not too impressed by his l'Avenir win. "It does not affect me. I want to do my job and be as strong as possible in the races that I am selected for." However, he is still excited. "It was a huge satisfaction to see the reward of the sacrifices. I am proud to obtain such a prestigious title and be in the winners list next to great champions."
Soler first played football, but switched to cycling "for fun" : "A teammate went to school in Vilanova. We rode there by bike and did laps of a circuit with the rest of the kids at the end of training and there was a good vibe. Paco Galvez, the manager, made us enjoy it a lot and I did not feel as much tension as in football." He realized his potential "in the second year in the youth ranks in Huesca La Magia" and the "turning port" was his two years with the Lizarte team from 2012 to 2014.
Now he regards himself as "a complete rider". "I climb well and I defend myself on the flats and in the time trial. Although I can't win in evert discipline, I consider myself a versatile guy." For now, he has no grand tour plans. "I have time. I have done well in one-week races and that motivates me." He is pleased to be part of the Movistar Team. "This is my reference team, Miguel Indurain's team, and number one in the WorldTour. That's exciting!"
He doesn't hesitate when asked about his favourite race. "My home race, the Volta [a Catalunya]. Hopefully, I can win it someday." Soler believes that there are lots of Spaniards to take over from Contador, Rodriguez, Samuel Sanchez and Valverde: "Yes. Landa has already been on the podium in the Giro. We also have Ruben Fernandez, Ion Izaguirre, Jesus Herrada, Barbero. But of course it will be impossible to match them."
