Having previously suggested that the Astana rider should do the Giro-Tour double, Nibali's trainer Paolo Slongo has now abandoned the idea. Instead, he confirms that the reigning Tour champion will focus fully on La Grande Boucle and skip his home grand tour.
Vincenzo Nibali won't do the 2015 Giro d'Italia. In an interview with Tribuna di Treviso, his personal trainer Paolo Slongo confirms that the Astana rider will focus fully on the Tour de France.
"We have abandoned the idea of the Giro-Tour double. We decided that it would be a gamble. Vincenzo will focus on La Grande Boucle where he will ne joined by Fabio Aru who will be the captain in the Giro in May. Before making a decision, we wanted to know the tour of the Tour. And the 2015 edition will be very demanding and have uphill finishes in the first week. Nibali can not afford to go to the Giro just to participate and prepare for the Tour. The initial idea was to be at 80% and then reach his peak in the final weak. Due to the course, that idea is impossible. The Tour is tailor-made for Vincenzo: the cobblestones, only 14km of individual time trial and a team time trial. To do well at the Giro would be uncertain."
Slongo also unveiled the first part of Nibali's schedule for the next season which will be slightly different from 2014. As confirmed he will start at the Dubai Tour before going to Tirreno-Adriatico insted of Paris-Nice. Then he will be at the start of Milan - San Remo , Amstel Gold Race , Fleche Wallonne and Liège - Bastogne - Liège. His participation in the Tour de Romandie is still uncertain.
