Jan Tratnik (Amplatz) benefited from bad luck from pre-race favourite Primoz Roglic (LottoNL-Jumbo) to claim a maiden Slovenian road race title. Aftet the pair had gone clear in the finale, Roglic suffered a puncture which allowed Tratnik to solo to victory before Luka Mezgec (Orica-GreenEDGE) beat David Per (Adria Mobil) in the sprint for second.

Having opted not to defend his time trial title, Jan Tratnik confirmed the great form he had shown with his win in the mountains competition at the Tour de Slovenie and his seventh place at the Tour of Slovakia by adding the road race crown to his growing palmares. Having gone into the race as an outsider, he mixed it up with the WorldTour riders and then venefited from a bit of luck to take the biggest win of his career.

The race was held on a 168km course in Ihan and already in the second of the 12 laps, the decisive move was formed. Tratnik, Primoz Roglič (LottoNL-Jumbo), Luka Mezgec (Zorica GreenEdge), last year's champion Luka Pibernik (Lampre-Merida) and young talent David Per (Adria Mobil) managed to get clear and it soon became obvious that they would decide the race.

With three laps to go, Tratnik made his move and only Roglic could follow. The pair worked well together until disaster struck for the Giro stage winner and newly crowned TT champion. On the penultimate lap, he had a front weheel puncture and while he had to stop, Tratnik rode away. The Amplatz rider managed to hold off his chasers to claim the biggest win of his career befor Mezgec beat Per, Pibernik and Roglic in the sprint for second.

It is still unclear when Tratnik will wear his new jersey for the first time.
