After recently concluding its July training camp, Trek-Segafredo has selected three stagiaires to join the team for the remainder of the 2016 season. Jacopo Mosca, Piet Allegaert, and Jose Luis Rodríguez earned spots with the WorldTour squad in a few upcoming select races, still to be determined.
Italian Jacopo Mosca, 22, rides for the U23 team Viris Vigevano. Mosca started racing at age 10 and won 20 races in the youth category, showing early promise. Known as a climber, Mosca achieves best results in the hardest races. With his attacking style, Mosca has consistent finishes in the top 10 in the past two seasons.
Piet Allegaert, 21, comes from Trek-Segafredo's development team EFC Etixx. The young Belgian is a specialist in one-day races and short time trials and prologues. As a junior, he finished 6th in the Tour of Flanders and in this year's Paris-Roubaix U23 he finished in 7th place. Allegaert has been part of the Belgium National team since his junior years.
Jose Luis Rodríguez, 22, is a Chilean cyclist competing for the UCI's World Cycling Center development team. He is the 2015 U23 National Champion and 2016 Pan-American Champion for road and time trial. Rodríguez is a specialist in the time trials and has shown a prowess for climbing. An aggressive rider, he made a name for himself in last year's Tour de L’Avenir when he earned the leader's jersey in stage four.
Trek-Segafredo recently launched a young rider development program to have a better process in its selection of stagiaires each year, and to create a database of young riders for the future. During the July training camp in the Alps, 11 development riders joined 5 Trek-Segafredo riders in rigorous field testing under the supervision of the team's performance task force headed by Josu Larrazabal. When the week-long camp concluded, Mosca, Allegaert, and Rodríguez were selected to join Trek-Segafredo, while the remaining riders will continue as part of the control group.
