Following reports in La Gazzetta dello Sport that Fabian Cancellara (Trek) had scheduled his rumoured hour record attempt for August 3 on the track in Aguascalientes, Mexico, the Treak team has issued a statement, making it clear that no decision will be made until after the classics. However, the planning of the project continues and it appears to be no longer in question that the attempt will be made at some point in 2014.
Since Fabian Cancellara first aired the idea of going for Ondrej Sosenka's hour record of 49.700km, the attempt has attracted a fair bit of interest. Inspired by Cancellara's thought, Bradley Wiggins and Tony Martin have both played with similar ideas while the press has been busy speculating when and where an attempt could be made.
Today La Gazzetta dello Sport reported that a final decision had been made, with Cancellara making his bid for a place in the history books on August 3 on the track in Aguascalientes in Mexico. Until now, Cancellara has denied to confirm that he will indeed make an attempt in 2014 but the team has repeatedly stated that they have been looking at several potential days that come a few weeks after one of Cancellara's main road targets.
Following the recent reports, the team has issued a statement, clarifying that no final decision has been made and that nothing will be determined until after the classics. For now, Cancellara is fully focused on his attempt to repeat his Flanders-Roubaix double but the teams also confirms that the project is going ahead, with an attempt likely to take place in 2014.
“We haven’t taken any decision whatsoever about the time and the place for an attempt," manager Luca Guercilena said. "As we have said before, the team will communicate in the appropriate time. Any other information that circulates around a possible attempt is premature.
“We are working on this project since some time now and we have a series of people managing the project, including engineers at Trek Bicycle. However, there is no present-day reference for this kind of endeavor and we are still studying all of its facets. We are in discussions with several tracks around the world, and in terms of timing, I can only confirm that we are no longer considering the period after the Classics for an attempt. The focus for Fabian is now fully on the Classics and an attempt to repeat the success of last year. After Paris-Roubaix, we’ll turn our attention to the hour record and we will have more details.”
Several possible venues have been mentioned and it is rumoured that the tracks in Aguascalientes, Mallorca, and Manchester are now in pole position.
Cancellara is currently riding the Tour of Oman in the Middle East.
