With Segafredo as new co-sponsor, Trek Factory Racing has been given a solid financial injection. And although 2016 has yet to begin, the team is already thinking of the reinforcements for 2017. Greg Van Avermaet and Peter Sagan are already on the wish list.
"If I compare the budget of 2016 with that of last season, I see an increase of about 30 percent," team manager Luca Guercilena said at the presentation of Trek-Segafredo, the team that will include Fabian Cancellara in 2016.
"That should enable us to attract better riders for 2017. Whether it is unfortunate that we have already finalized the roster? No, I am satisfied with the core that I have put together for 2016," the Italian manager told the Mediahuis newspapers.
However, with the increased budget, Trek will have more opportunities on the transfer market at the end of next year. And with the departure of Fabian Cancellara, they have to look for new leaders for the classics. Does the American team already have a replacement in mind?
"It will be someone who is already at a high level and can achieve immediate results," Guercilena explained. "We want to win races. You cannot put that kind of pressure on the shoulders of young people regardless of their talent.
"Which riders am I considering? Everyone knows the market. Van Avermaet will soon be free. Sagan, if Tinkoff folds. They are at the level that we aspire to. Of course I would love to have one of them in 2017 but the market is a bit more complicated.”
It has already been known for some time that the team has its eyes on Vincenzo Nibali and Tejay van Garderen for the stage races.
