On Thursday Vuelta a España conqueror Chris Horner said in a tweet that he will not be riding for the Trek outfit in the 2014 season, thus terminating four years of cooperation between the rider and the team.

Since the American’s win in the Spanish Grand Tour last months, negotiations have been going on for him to join the two Schleck brothers and Fabian Cancellara amongst others but they have failed to materialize in a new contract.

As a result Horner will be racing for another team next year, something which Trek says it regrets.

“Chris is a great rider, champion, and person and we wish we could have worked something out,” the company told VeloNation.com.

“Though we could not find common ground, it is not a reflection of how we feel about Chris whom we greatly respect and admire. All of us wish him the best in the future.”

In September, to the surprise of most fans and media pundits, Horner won two stages plus the overall classification in the Vuelta a España, thus becoming the oldest Grand Tour winner ever.

To his dismay, though, Horner struggled to receive the offers that he felt he merited. He said in several interviews that he felt he was undervalued and was holding out for a payment that he believed was justified, given his overall Vuelta a España win.

However, given his age – he will turn 42 next week – plus the large number of teams folding and devaluating the market value of riders that have become surplus to requirements, the American veteran experienced a paucity of attractive offers.
