Mathieu van der Poel took a comfortable win in yesterday's Superprestige race in Diegem and took the overall lead in the series. However, the Dutchman didn't have a super day and sufffering on the tough course.
Mathieu van der Poel got one step close to the overall win in the Superprestige series when he won yesterday's race in Diegem. With the win, he moved from second to first in the overall standings and now leads Kevin Pauwels by a single point with two races to go.
"I'm glad I can finally show my good shape," Van der Poel told Sporza. "Still I didn't have an absolute super day. Today the top four were evenly matched.
"I have benefited fully from Lars van der Haar's crash. Suddenly, there was a gap behind me and I knew that I could no longer have any doubt. The final laps were still difficult. It was smooth and I did not make mistakes.
"I also had to swap bikes again. The chasers were still very close. I was very happy when I could raise my arms. In the standings, it is very close. Everything can still happen but I'd rather be one point ahead than one behind."
