Trofeo Laigueglia has been recognized for its deep history by the UCI who have elevated the race from its 1.1 category. In 2015, the February race will be a 1.HC event.
Good news have emerged from Liguria. The International Cycling Union has rewarded the history of Trofeo Laigueglia by promoting it to a 1.HC event. The event will take place on February 19, a few months before the Grande Partenza of the 2015 Giro d'Italia which will take place in the region.
A noted by Franco Maglione, mayor of Laigueglia, the Testico climb which is the symbol of the Ligurian race, will be the first categorized climb of the 2015 edition of the Italian grand tour, an award to the cycling commitment of the small city.
"This is a result which gives due recognition to the classic roads of Laigueglia and it happens in 2015, a big cycling year for Liguria, with the Trofeo Laigueglia, Milan-San Remo, Giro dell'Appenninno and the Giro della Lunigiana all taking place in the build-up to Corsa Rosa," said the Regional Minister for Sport Matteo Rossi. "Each of them play a strategic role in the promotion of a popular sport in close contact with the territory and the surrounding landscape."
