The ski resorts of La Molina and Port Ainé will host two mountaintop finishes in the Volta Ciclista a Catalunya (March 21-27).
La Molina will host the first of the two summit finales in the third stage (March 23). In 2015, Tejay van Garderen won at the ski resort whereJoaquim Rodriguez triumphed in 2014. The next day, stage four (24 March) will reach the roof of the Tour at the mountain resort of Port Ainé. Daniel Martin won here in 2013 and the race was unable to reach the finish there in 2012 due to bad weather.
With the two summit finishes, the race continues its trend of having very mountainous courses. This year the race only offered one summit finish but next year there will be two opportunities for the climbers. In recent editions, the race has visited Port Aine (2012 and 2013), Vallter 2000 (2013 and 2014) and Molina (2013, 2014 and 2015).
In March 2016, La Molina, located halfway between the regions of the Cerdanya, Berguedà and Ripollès, and Port Ainé will again welcome one of the most traditional races in the cycling world, with over 100 years of history and 95 editions already held. Barcelona will host the final stage with its well-known circuit on the Montjuic climb.
Porte won the 2015 edition, with Valverde, Pozzovivo, Contador, Uran and Aru completing the top 6. Joaquim Rodriguez won in 2010 and 2014, Daniel Martin in 2013, Michael Albasini in 2012, Michele Scarponi in 2011 (after the disqualification of Contador) and Alejandro Valverde in 2009.
