Following Lampre-Merida's announcement that the Italian team has been granted a two-year ProTeam license, the UCI has released the final list of teams who will be part of the best two divisions of the sport. Team Europcar will be the only new ProTeam in 2014 while Bretagne-Seche Environnement is the only addition to the list of Pro Continental Teams that was released in early November.
The UCI has finalized its registration procedure for the coming season, granting ProTeam licenses to 18 teams and professional continental licenses to 17 teams. Compared to the initial list of ProTeams that contained 9 teams, another 9 squads have been granted access to the top echelon of the sport.
In 2013 the WorldTour exceptionally consisted of 19 teams after the CAS ruled that the UCI had no right to deny Katusha a place in the best division. According to the rules, a maximum of 18 ProTeams may be registered and with the demises of Vacansoleil and Euskaltel, there was one open spot.
Only one team applied for the vacant license as the French Europcar team asked to get back to the highest level after having raced under a pro continental license since 2011. The team had success in its application and was granted a two-year license.
On November 5, Ag2r, Belkin, BMC, Cannondale, FDJ, Garmin-Sharp, Omega Pharma-Quick Step, Katusha and Team Tinkoff-Saxo who all had an existing license in place, were confirmed as being part of the WorldTour for the coming season. A few days later, Lotto Belisol sent in a few missing papers and were allowed to continue in the top division.
Astana, Lampre-Merida, Movistar, Orica-GreenEDGE and Sky all had their licenses up for renewal but they will all be part of the WorldTour in the coming years. Lampre-Merida have been granted a two-year license while the other teams will only continue at the highest level until the end of the 2016 season.
Team Argos-Shimano and Trek Factory Racing both have an existing license for the 2014 season but had to go through the extended registration procedure. The former team will have Argos replaced as main sponsor and had to send it additional information while the latter team has taken over the license from the Radioshack team and so had to appear before the license commission. Both teams have had their 2014 licenses confirmed.
Finally, the UCI also finalized their registration of Pro Continental teams. On November 5, Androni Giocattoli, Bardiani - CSF, Caja Rural - Seguros Rga, CCC Polsat Polkowice, Cofidis, Solutions Crédits, Colombia, Drapac Professional Cycling, IAM Cycling, MTN - Qhubeka, Rusvelo, Team Netapp - Endura, Team Novo Nordisk, Topsport Vlaanderen - Baloise, Unitedhealthcare Professional Cycling Team, Wanty - Groupe Gobert, andYellow Fluo were all granted a license, with the Bretagne-Seche Environnement being the only major absentee. Today the UCI has issued a license to the French team and so the Pro Continental field will be made up of 17 teams.
Next year the system is set to face a major overhaul, with the likely introduction of a first and second division with automatic promotion and relegation.
