The organizational chaos in the recently concluded 2014 edition of the Giro d’Italia not only caused huge controversies following the infamous queen stage of the three-week event, but revealed reluctance of the UCI commissioners in taking responsibility for difficult decisions and lack of clear enough rules describing behavior in circumstances threatening riders’ safety.
Thus, according to Belgian media, professional cycling teams requested the UCI to give their commissioners more power to take control under happenings when a safety of athletes is in danger and to create clear rules describing behavior in particular situations to avoid similar controversies in the future.
