The Tour of Poland got off to a perfect start for Lampre-Merida as Diego Ulissi sprinted home to take the stage victory and claim the overall lead in the race.

The first stage, 184.5 km from Rovereto to Madonna di Campiglio, was characterized by a bold attack of a dozen riders. However, under the pressure of Cannondale and Movistar at the town of Pinzolo, at the foot of the final climb, the advantage of the fugitives was reduced and on the ramps that led the group to Madonna di Campiglio, the group was reduced to about twenty riders. Excellent work from his teammates Scarponi, Niemiec, Serpa, Stortoni and Anacona escorted Ulissi into the first positions prior to the final climb. Ulissi was able to keep the pace imposed by his opponents without wasting an ounce of energy. He then waited for the final with the feeling of being one of the fastest runners in the sprint. In the end, Ulissi was able to outsprint Atapuma and Majka for the win.

"I'm really happy to have achieved the victory today, for me and for the whole team,” Ulissi said. “I thank my teammates because they have really shown that we are a united group and that when everything runs perfectly we are there to fight with the best riders out there. Now the first step has been taken, but we must continue on this path and try to bring home more wins until the end."
