After an excellent first season as professional, Davide Formolo again showed his excellent climbing potential when he finished third in his first race with Cannondale-Garmin. Having stayed with Alejandro Valverde in the finale, however, he was unable to get back to race winner Stephen Cummings.
"When Cummings attacked, I was focused on Valverde," he told La Gazzetta dello Sport. "Then I attacked too. I worked a bit with Valverde but Cummings was already gone.a couple of changes, but Cummings was already gone."
The Italian is still happy with the outcome satisfied with the outcome because it "means that I worked well" but he is already thinking about the race on Saturday, the third event of the Challenge, Trofeo Serra de Tamuntana (165km) which has a very demanding profile.
And then there is the big question about which grand tour Formolo will do: Giro or Vuelta?
"I think I won't know anything before next week," he said. "If they want to make me the best gift, I will do the Giro. But if it won't happen this year, I'm 22 years old and then it will be in 2016."
Meanwhile, Formolo continues to study English and has already built a food relationship with Dan Martin: "We made the trip to New York for the team presentation together."
