Valkenburg wants to host the world championships cyclocross. According to Dutch newspaper 'de Telegraaf', the city has offered their candidacy for 2018. The city already hosted the world championships on the road in 1938, 1948, 1979, 1998 and 2012.
Since last year, Valkenburg is site of the first world cup-cross of the season. The race takes place on the famous 'Cauberg' climb. "However, for the world championships, we will have to create a complete new course." Jo Romlig race director of the 'Cauberg-cross' told 'de Telegraaf'. He later elaborated, "we have to be able to receive 60.000 spectators. The plan is very ambitious. But we have proved numerous times that we are able to organize big events."
The 'Cauberg-cross' was won yesterday by Lars van der Haar. The young Dutchman also won the first edition of the race last year.
