Alejandro Valverde just missed last year’s podium at the Tour de France with a fourth place. Shortly after the race, Valverde’s team Movistar stated that 2014 was the last time that Valverde was their leader in ‘la Grand Boucle’ and that he likely would never ride the Tour again.

However, after the course was announced last October, Movistar and Valverde quickly changed their tone and stated that Valverde would ride the Tour de France to help their leader Nairo Quintana and to try to win stages himself.

Three months later, it looks like the 34-year old rider has again changed his mind and has more ambitions than to work for Quintana and try to win stages.

“I have two more goals left that I still want to achieve”, The Spanish rider told AS. “To become world champion and finish on the podium in the Tour de France. I will go after these goals till the day I retire.”

These words are a complete contradiction to what Valverde stated several months ago, when he said that he was 100% dedicated to work for Quintana. It is interesting to see how both Movistar and Quintana are going to respond.
