A few days ago it was announced that Alejandro Valverde will skip the World Championships. In a text message, the Spaniard told the Spanish national coach Javier Minguez that he would leave the spot for another rider.
"My head says that it is enough for this season,” the 36-year-old Movistar rider wrote after Il Lombardia. In an interview with El Confidencial, Minguez explains that he understands that decision.
After a busy season, Valverde made it clear that he will not be ready for a race in which he has minimal chances for a medal.
He has hada packed program. In late January, he began the year with places of honor in Mallorca and late he won Fleche Wallonne. He started all three Grand Tours (3rd in the Giro, 6th in the Tour, 12th in the Vuelta 12th) and last Saturday he finished sixth in Lombardy. He ends the season with seven wins and numerous podium places.
