Wout van Aert has takes his sixth victory of the season at the Poldercross in Kruibeke. The leader of Vastgoedservice-Golden Palace waited until the penultimate lap to make his final attack and easily beat contemporaries Michael Vanthourenhout (Sunweb-Napoleon Games) and Laurens Sweeck (ERA Murprotec).
The race started in a bad way for crowd favourite Sven Nys: in the very first corner he had to deal with a chain problem. Half a minute later the Cannibal of Baal jumped back on his bike and he was doing his best to make up ground but then lost his chain again. Nys could completely forget about victory and finished only seventh.
Meanwhile, a front group of nine had gathered, with Wout van Aert, Rob Peeters and Joeri Adams (Vastgoedserice-Golden Palace), Michael and Dieter Vanthourenhout and Klaas Vantornout (Sunweb-Napoleon Games), Laurens and Diether Sweeck (ERA -Murprotec) and Tom Meeusen (Telenet Fidea). No one seemed to really want to open the race, so everything stayed together for a long time. Only when Sven Nys at one point was only fifteen seconds behind, Van Aert made an acceleration.
After his initial acceleration, Vanthournhout and Sweeck managed to join him. After his second attack, Vanthourenhout was still there so he had to wait for a third attack. It came ten minutes before the finish. Van Aert got an advantage of ten seconds and could do the final lap at a controlling pace.
Lars van der Haar (Giant Alpecin) and Kevin Pauwels (Sunweb-Napoleon Games) were not at the start and saved their legs for tomorrow's Superprestige race in Zonhoven. After his victory in Gieten, van Aert is the leader in the standings.
