This year Greg Van Avermaet rode a strong Tour de France and got close to a stage win on several occasions. He is satisfied with the course for the 2015 race. "There's something for everyone," he tells Sporza.
"It will be the first time that I really ride through Belgium with the Tour peloton. The finish in Huy is nice and is my first goal. Afterwards, we go to Bretagne where the short, steep climbs should suit me.
"Then I will have to work for Tejay (van Garderen, ed.). In the short stages with lots of climbs, the riders are not watching rider like me. But I can survive such stages and look for opportunities. During the Tour, you don't get many chances so you have to seize them. I will be ready for stages like the one to Mur-de-Bretagne."
In September, BMC won the TTT Words. Hence, the team time trial in stage 9 is an important one for the American team.
"On that day, a teammate may take the yellow jersey. That is definitely a goal. It will be a stressful day but we have something to defend. We have the specialists."
In general, Van Avermaet sees opportunities in the Tour. But he won't change his approach.
"No, the classics remain my main goal. After them, I will think about the Tour. Sanremo, Flanders, Roubaix and Amstel remain the most important races. That's where the ream relies on me. I need to be good there."
