Greg Van Avermaet is currently taking the next step in his rehabilitation process at the BMC training camp in Spain after he broke his ankle in a mountain bike crash a few weeks ago. "It's wait and see how I will be at the start of my first races. But I can also learn fromthis," the Olympic champion told Sporza.
Last week Greg Van Avermaet still had to train on the rollers, but in recent days he could ride with his team mates. "My rehabilitation is progressing as it should," he told the Belgian TV channel
"I've been able to do some good workouts, but I do not force anything. I feel that it is still not 100 percent, but I try to have the least possible delay."
Because of his injury Greg Van Avermaet could not finish his usual workouts in recent weeks. "Anyway, I will have a disadvantage because I have done a lot less than in previous years.
"Normally I train hard, but I do this for the first time. It's wait and see how I will be at the start of my first races. But I can also learn from it.
"If I once again perform at a very high level, it is the signal for the next few years that I can build up a bit quieter. I can still not say much about it, but there's still enough time to have a good condition at the start of the season. "
When will we get to see the "old Greg" again? "Preferably as soon as possible," said the Olympic champion. "In the Omloop Het Nieuwsblad I want to be good, but that race is not the main goal. I want to be back at 100 percent from Milano-Sanremo and compete for the win."
The Tour of Flanders remains the goal for Greg Van Avermaet. "That's the main race I want to win. I have put myself under pressure. This tave is on my wish list and I want to win De Ronde next year."
During the last few weeks, Van Avermaet skipped several award ceremonies but one gala is marked with in his calendar. "I hope I will be Sportsman of the Year. When you look at the honors lis, it would be an honor to be among those names."
