The Belgian Cycling Federation has confirmed that Tom Meeusen, Bart Wellens and Greg Van Avermaet will be asked to provide an explanation explanation of their relationships to Dr Chris Mertens who is accused of treating athletes with ozone therapy. BMC and lawyer Johnny Maeschalck are now considering whether Van Avermaet should go there himself, meaning that he will have to skip Tirreno-Adriatico (and perhaps Milan-Sanremo).
The case revolves around Doctor Chris Mertens from Rotselaar who has been under investigation by the prosecutor in Leuven
"The investigation has revealed facts that may indicate possible doping practices by Meeusen, Wellens and Van Avermaet," the federation wrote in a statement.
On Friday, March 13 at 11.00, they must all appear before the Disciplinary Commission. BMC will now discuss whether Van Avermaet needs to present.
If Van Avermaet decides to go there, he will have to skip Tirreno-Adriatico, a preparation race for Milan-Sanremo. Even that latter race could then be taken off his schedule.
