Dylan Van Baarle of Cannondale-Drapac is one of the GC options for his team at the Tour of Britain. CyclingQuotes caught up with him before stage one kicked off in Glasgow to ask him about his ambitions for the race.
“The GC is the goal, if we will achieve it or not we will know on the last day in London. If you don’t try, you don’t win so we will try and see how far we can get,” Van Baarle exclusively told CyclingQuotes in Glasgow.
The Dutchman knows better than anyone else how joining a breakaway can really help your GC aims, doing so in 2014 as he took the Yellow Jersey and held onto it until the end. Is another Van Baarle sneak attack on the cards for this year?
“Maybe we can do another surprise attack, it depends how the race develops. Last year it didn’t work out but in 2014 the surprise move did work. Maybe someone can pull something off and go far in this race.”
The Worlds in Qatar will have the potential for echelons in the first 150km, and after taking sixth in Flanders to go with a fourth in Dwars door Vlaanderen, Van Baarle is looking to make the Dutch team for Doha.
“Of course it is always an honour to race with the national team. I hope I will get selected for the Worlds, it probably depends a little on this race and the Eneco Tour in a few weeks. I really want to make the team for Qatar though.”
He only has one race day since finishing his second Tour de France, so Van Baarle says he is feeling fresh and hopes his legs are feeling good for this week.
“I’ve only done Plouay since the Tour, so my legs are good. Last week, I had a flat tire in the final so couldn’t dhow my legs but I hope they are still good here!” said Van Baarle, laughing as the interview came to an end.
