Jürgen Van den Broeck (Lotto-Belisol) crashed during the first stage of the Vuelta al País Vasco on the top of the final climb, seven km before the finish.
The rider in front of Van den Broeck crashed and that’s how the Lotto-Belisol fell as well. Van den Broeck hit his right elbow and right knee. A first check-up didn’t show any fractures. Further reports regarding the rider’s condition are expected on Monday.
Van den Broeck was riding in the front rows of the peloton on the Alto de Aiastia, the crash happened in the front and so only seventeen riders were heading to the finish.
On Sunday Bart De Clercq was the best Lotto-Belisol rider (31st), arriving in Elgoibar in a chasing group, five seconds behind stage winner Simon Gerrans (Orica-GreenEDGE).
