The Lotto-Belisol leader is now back in full training. Fully recovered from his injury, he will now target his goal in 2014: Tour de France.
While expectation was high in this year's TDF, the Belgian fell and injured his knee in the final kilometers of stage 5, and had to abandon the race. Initially it looked like van den Broeck only suffered a minor injury, but later news revealed that the injury required surgery, and it would sideline him for over 2 months, and that effectively ended his 2013 season .
Van den Broeck had his best TDF result in 2010 and 2012, both 4th place in GC. Numerous bad luck and injury prevented him to get a better result.
2013 season was surely a disappointing one for the Lotto-Belisol leader. Aside from the TDF fall, he failed to get a single victory in any race, and the best GC result in one-week world tour races was merely a 7th in Tour de Romandie.
Other than TDF, the Belgian will challenge the Ardennes Classics in 2014 as well. In 2012 he got a 10th in La Fleche Wallonne.
