Lars van der Haar will unfortunately miss the second round of the cyclo-cross World Cup tomorrow in Koksijde, Belgium due to gastroenteritis. Van der Haar fell sick on Thursday night, and following an assessment with the team medical experts on Friday morning the decision was made that van der Haar would not start on Saturday, and his start at Sunday’s Superprestige race at Spa Francorchamps would be decided depending on his recovery.
“Lars fell sick last night with a stomach flu and after some discussions and tests this morning we have decided that he should drop out of tomorrow’s race and we will have to see how he recovers ahead of Sunday’s race and how fast he will recover,” explained Anko Boelens, Team Giant-Shimano medical expert. “We will make a decision on that later on.”
"I'm not allowed to start tomorrow in World Cup Koksijde. I still had a slight fever waking up. So doctor is giving the order not to start," van der Haar wrote on Twitter this morning.
Van der Haar is the current World Cup leader after winning the opening round in Valkenburg earlier this month. The third of six rounds falls next weekend in Milton Keynes, England.
