Known as a loyal domestique, Jos Van Emden rarely gets his own chance to shine but for some reason he is usually doing well in the Sparkassen Münsterland Giro. On Friday, he will be back to defend his second win in the race.

Jos van Emden hopes to come close to his two previous wins in the German one-day race, Sparkassen Münsterland Giro. In 2013 and 2007, the Belkin Pro Cycling TEAM Dutchman won the race, but says taking a third in 2014, this Friday, will be hard. 

“I’ve been out of competition for four weeks because of a broken elbow,” said Van Emden. “I’ll make my comeback on Friday. I might miss some rhythm, but the fact that I’ve had some time to rest could be an advantage. 

“The season is nearing its end and some riders may be fatigued. We haven’t talked about a plan with the team yet, but I’m proud to start the race with number one on my back. That doesn’t happen very often. I’m excited.”
 

Sports Director Frans Maassen will travel to Germany with a balanced team. He knows that the Sparkassen Münsterland Giro is often decided by a bunch sprint, but is aware the attackers always have their chance. 

“A sprint is expected and we feel fine about that,” said Maassen. “In Moreno Hofland, we have a strong sprinter. We have to be ready for attacks, though. The sprinters can be surprised by a strong move, as Jos has proved in the past.”
