BMC Racing Team's Tejay van Garderen saw his hopes for a high finish on the overall classification at the Volta a Catalunya end Wednesday when he crashed over a guardrail on a descent.

Van Garderen was not seriously hurt in the mishap that involved several other riders about 35 kilometers from the end of the 156.6-kilometer race. But he lost five minutes just getting going again, BMC Racing Team Sport Director Yvon Ledanois said. He eventually finished 148th on the day, nearly 16 minutes behind the winner.

"Tejay knows the general classification is finished for him," Ledanois said to the BMC website. "He is disappointed for the team and I am disappointed for him because he has good legs to get a result. I am sure that without his crash today, he would have been in the front group."

Domenico Pozzovivo (AG2R La Mondiale) sprinted clear out of a group of seven that went clear on the final climb to take the stage win. Pierre Rolland (Team Europcar), who was part of a breakaway on Monday's opening stage, assumed the race lead.

Darwin Atapuma, in 29th place, was the BMC Racing Team's best finisher on the day, arriving in a group 22 seconds after Pozzovivo. He is 26th overall, 2:46 back.
