Kenny Van Hummel is one of the most successful riders on the Vacansoleil team but the Dutch sprinter still hasn't found a team for the coming season. Now De Telegraaf reports that he may join his current teammate Johnny Hoogerland at Androni-Venezuela in 2014.
Kenny Van Hummel has been a prolific winner on the European cycling scene for several seasons and rose to fame when he battled hard in a failed attempt to get through his maiden Tour de France in 2009. Nonetheless, the sprinter is one of the Vacansoleil riders that hasn't found a team for the 2014 season and he recently vented his frustration, saying that his career could be brought to a premature end.
Now a door may have opened up for the rider who was dubbed the worst climber in the history of the Tour de France by the race's technical director Jean-Francois Pescheux. According to De Telegraaf, Van Hummel could sign a contract with Androni-Venezuela for the coming season.
Van Hummel turned professional in 2007 with Skil-Shimano and made his name as a strong sprinter while riding for the Dutch team. His exploits in the Tour de France may have taken the greatest headlines but the Dutchman has long been one of the most successful sprinters in Belgian and Dutch races.
He got his chance at WorldTour level when he signed with Vacansoleil in 2012 but unfortunately his progressed stalled in his new surroundings. Stage wins in last year's Tour de Picardie and this year's Arcitic Tour of Norway were his only successes for his new team.
A move to Androni-Venezuela is somewhat of a surprise as the Italian team has mostly had Italian and South Americans on their roster in the past. However, team manager Gianni Savio has already signed Van Hummel's teammate and compatriot Johnny Hoogerland, indicating that the team may have a broader recruitment policy in the future.
Van Hummel could join forces with the team's current sprinter Mattia Gavazzi and new signing Manuel Belletti to represent an increased focus on the sprints for the Italian team. At the same time, the team will lose some of its main climbers as Franco Pellizotti and Miguel Angel Rubiano will join Astana and Colombia respectively. The team will lose another fast finisher Fabio Felline who has signed a contract with Trek.
Yesterday, the team announced that they have signed 18-year-old Carlos Gimenez who will turn professional with them in 2015.
