Brian Vandborg (Cannondale) celebrated his recent selection for the Cannondale Tour de France squad by taking a surprising win in the Danish time trial championships. He held off former U23 worlds runner-up Rasmus Quaade (Team Trefor) and Rasmus Sterobo (Team Cult Energy) to take his first title since his maiden win in 2006.
Brian Vandborg was regarded as a huge time trialling talent earlier in his career and when he finished a surprise 4th at the 2006 world championships, it appeared as though his talent was finally about to blossom. Instead, his progress stalled and he has never been close to make similar splendid performances since.
He has developed into a solid domestique at the Cannondale team but today he proved that his time trialling talent has not completely disappeared, claiming his second Danish national title in the discipline 7 years after his first one.
Rasmus Quaade had hoped to reclaim the title but the talented time triallist had to settle for 2nd while Rasmus Sterobo completed the podium. Garmin-Sharp rider Alex Rasmussen finished 4th while the best Saxo-Tinkoff rider was Mads Christensen in a disappointing 8th place.
The big home team will get a chance for revenge on Sunday in the road race where the team will set out in an attempt to take back the title that was surprisingly won by then-continental rider Sebastian Lander last year.
Result:
1. Brian Vandborg 48.44
2. Rasmus Quaade +0.06
3. Rasmus Sterobo +0.49
4. Alex Rasmussen +0.51
5. Lasse Norman Hansen +0.55
