The seventh stage of the Giro d'Italia takes the riders from Sulmano to Foligno. The course has a rather hilly profile and there’s a climb of the second category in the beginning of the stage. At 40 kilometres from the finish the final obstacle of the day will be tackled - a climb of the fourth category.
This stage offers a new opportunity to the sprinters, although several possible outcomes can take place. Jelle Vanendert gives a preview.
“It’s true that it has been a long time since I rode my last Giro (2009, ed.)," he said. "The schedule of a rider is drawn up with his big goals in mind. I really looked forward to start here in Italy, we had some specific goals beforehand and that’s easier to work for as a rider. I don’t mind sacrificing myself for André or for the team, especially when that leads to a nice result. Everyone in the team is happy and that gives us confidence for the other stages in this race. I think that there will be opportunities for me later in this Giro, maybe I’ll join a break.
"Today, I expect the same situation as the day before yesterday. Although I think that we don’t need to do all the work at the front of the peloton as we already won two stages. The roads in this region are never entirely flat so I’m curious about the outcome today!”
