Lotto Soudal rider Jelle Vanendert will replace Gianni Meersman at the European Games. Meersman has not recovered sufficiently from his injuries sustained in the Giro and must forfet his participation.
The UCI has announced that Jelle Vanendert will be the sixth rider in the selection of Belgian coach Carlo Bomans for the European Games in Baku. Vanendert replaces Gianni Meersman who had originally been selected. Meersman crashed heavily in the third stage of the Giro and has suffered from pain the lower back and ribs. One day later Meersman abandoned the Giro.
More than three weeks later Meersman still suffers from back pain and breathing problems and therefore Bomans had to look for a new sixth rider. In the end the spot was given to Jelle Vanendert, who had his spring destroyed by crashes in the Amstel Gold Race and Fleche Wallonne.
The rest of the selection for June 21 is made up of Tiesj Benoot, Tom Boonen, Jens Keukeleire, Stijn Vandenbergh and Maarten Wynants.
