After the team time trial, the riders in the Tour de France enjoy a nice rest day. Sep Vanmarcke will take the chance to take stock of the first week. The LottoNL-Jumbo riders wonders whether the Tour de France is something for him.
In the first week of the Tour, Sep Vanmarcke has been allowed to have his own chance. Especially the stage to Cambrai with cobbles was a big goal but due to two punctures I never played a role.
"That's the story of my spring," Vanmarcke told Sporza. "I was good and again I was unable to show it. I was very disappointed after the race. Perhaps I had expected too much and then it is natural to be sad.
"After that I have had two days of riding around with the question: What can I do in this Tour? There are few opportunities for a rider like me in the Tour, and I have realized that again during this week. Next year I will have to take another look at whether it is wise to come back. Whether the Tour is something for a rider like me?
"Meanwhile, I have to stay focused. The Pyrenees are coming and I will try to make the best of it. I will especially try to help Robert Gesink, which is aiming for a good GC. After the Pyrenees, there are a few transitional stages where I can maybe try something, but 90 percent of the peloton have the same plans.
"The rest day? I look forward to it. My girlfriend will visit me. It'll be nice to see her again. For the rest, there will be a little riding, massage and lots of rest."
