Team Katusha rider Angel Vicioso took second place in the third stage of the Tour of Austria. At the finish in Judendorf, Vicioso was passed just by Rick Zabel from BMC, who won the stage. Third place was Slovenian Jan Tratnik from Amplatz – BMC.
"This morning I was really motivated to do well in this stage. I am pretty fast in the sprint and that climb in last 10 km could provide a good selection for a smaller group in the finish. I wanted to get some bonus seconds and, why not, to try to get the yellow jersey. Finally, it was quite a big group in the finish, but I was able to do a strong sprint. I started a little bit early, right after we passed the last corner and only Zabel could pass me," said Angel Vicioso.
After stage 3 Angel Vicioso took the yellow jersey and the lead in the general classification. Gerald Ciolek from MTN-Qhubeka is second, 1 second behind Katusha’s rider.
The third stage of the Tour of Austria started in Windischgarsten and ended in Judendorf/Strassengel after 181,1 km of racing. A group of 3 riders went away in the first part of the race, but later it was Gatis Smukulis who counter-attacked and joined the breakaway, which stayed in front of the race until the final 14 km.
With 7 km to go on the last climb after a number of attacks, a new group went away with Sven Erik Bystrøm among this group. Inside the final 2 km this group also was neutralized, and the massive sprint decided the stage winner.
Tomorrow it is the first decisive stage of the Tour of Austria 2015 – 201,2 km from Stift Rein to Drobatsch.
