Davide Vigano had a great opportunity to take his first win for Caja Rural in today's Clasica de Almeria when he was one of the sprinters to make the selection when Movistar split the race in the crosswinds. In the end, the Italian had to settle for third and he regretted losing a rare chance to go for the win.
Prior to the season, Caja Rural signed Davide Vigano as an important lead-out man for their sprinter Francesco Lasca but with the latter out with injury, the new signing has had to sprint for himself in the early part of the season. He has done well with a number of top 10 results but today he had his biggest chance of success.
In the Clasica de Almeria he was one of the few sprinters to make the selection when Movistar split the peloton in the crosswinds and he was even well-supported by teammates Luis Mas and David Arroyo who also made the split. In the end, however, he had to settle for third behind Sam Bennett and Juan Jose Lobato.
The fast Italian regretted a missed opportunity.
"[I am] happy but also sorry to miss such a big chance to win," he said. "I feel sorry for the team that has worked great for me. I have to be content with the fact that I feel better every day. In the Volta Catalunya, I hope to have my chances. "
