For the fifth year in a row, Linda Villumsen finished on the podium at the world time trial championships but once again the rainbow jersey eluded her. The New Zealander now hopes to figure out what's missing and come back to finally get everything right next year.
It's almost become a habit for Linda Villumsen to step onto the podium at the world time trial championships. For the fifth year in a row, the New Zealander finished in the top 3 when the 2013 race was decided in Florence today but once again there was no rainbow jersey for her.
This time it was Dutchman Ellen Van Dijk who went around the 22km course in a time that was 24 seconds faster than Villumsen and so she had to settle for 2nd. She admitted to being disappointed and hasn't given up hope of one day getting everything right.
"I won't say bad luck," she said at the press conference. "When someone is better, they just have to win. The podium is nice and I'm near the win every year but obviously something is missing. I will try to figure it out andmaybe next I will make it all the way to the top."
Van Dijk told the press that she had done a recon camp to check out the course a few months ago. Villumsen had had led of a meticulous preparation.
"I was close but still far from the win," she told CyclingQuotes.com after the press conference. "You are always a little bit disappointed but I haven't had the same opportunities to preview the course as Ellen. I had never seen three or four of the corners and I lost a bit of time there."
While she was disappointed, she admitted to know that the winner would be hard to beat.
"Actually, I had expected that she would pass because she has been so fast all year," he said. "But you are always a bit disappointed to get 2nd. You want to win, that's why we're all here."
In December, Villumsen's team Orica-AIS anounced that she had ended her career. However, it was a mistake made by the team and in March she announced that she had signed a contract with Wiggle Honda and resumed her career after a short break.
And it has been a successful comeback where she has both found her place in the team and made results on the road. She won the big race Route du France after having taken the final stage as well.
"It was a different year for me," she said at the press conference. "I started late in the season. I trained more at home and then came over and did race after race. I really enjoyed the season like this. It is different but obviously I'm still there and have made it onto the podium today. Of course I can also thank my team for that. It's been different but it's been good."
Villumsen is happy in her new surroundings and plans to stay where she is.
"It has been a nice time," she added to CyclingQuotes.com. "The girls on my new team have helped me really much. They have welcomed me with open arms and been super kind so it hasn't been any problem. At one point when I was really ill, they even pushed me across the line."
"I am really happy to be part of this team. These are the riders that have the best cohesiveness, it's the best team and we have really bonded well."
Villumsen will finish her season after Saturday's road race.
