CyclingQuotes.com talked to Alexandr Vinokourov after Vincenzo Nibali won his first ever Tour de France stage and the first of Astana this year. The Olympic champion and Astana DS revealed that the attack was planned from very early on the day.
After the success on today’s stage a lot of people had turned up outside the Astana team bus. Many people wanted to have a photo with the former rider and Olympic champion Vinokourov, but he found time to talk with CyclingQuotes.com.
”When you have a stage like this, which is a little like Liege-Bastogne-Liege, the team did a real good piece of work. Early on the stage I told Nibali: Why not try? There were some fine opportunities to win the stage today and we did, which is perfect. It was amazing teamwork and a nice victory,” Vinokourov said.
The tactic for tomorrow will be to focus on the jersey and of course try not to use as much power as tomorrow most likely will be a day for the sprinters.
“Regarding the yellow jersey we will take one day at a time. Today, we won a stage and tomorrow we will concentrate on the yellow jersey. Then will see how it turns out,” Vinokourov said and turned to the exited people.
