The Italian sprinter has won the opening stage of the British race (Peebles-Drumlanrig Castle, 201 km) with a great sprint that left behind Petacchi and Ciolek.  Viviani took the sixth win of the season and Cannondale Pro Cycling’s 34th.

"The last kilometre of the stage tended to rise and it wasn't easy to be in the front of the peloton after 200 kilometres" said Viviani.

"I tried to be covered as much as possible because we were sprinting against the wind. At one kilometre to go Marangoni took the head of the peloton to maintain the speed high while I was following Petacchi and Ciolek. When the Italian started the sprint, at 350 metres, I followed him. Then Cioleck passed him and I found the way to follow his wheel. I knew it wasn’t too long until the finish so I waited till the right moment, at 150 metres to go, I started my sprint. The choice of the timing to sprint was the key. Now I look forward to the next sprint arrivals. The most engaging is the last one in London. I'm also interested in the points classification: I'll see day by day if this could be a concrete target".

Tomorrow, for the second stage of the Tour of Britain, Viviani will wear the jersey of GC leader.
