On paper the fastest sprinter in the race, Elia Viviani finally got his stage win on day 4 of the USA Pro Challenge when he distanced his rivals by several bike lengths in the final dash to the line. Having caught Jens Voigt just 800m from the finish, the Italian apologized to the veteran who was chasing a farewell victory.
In stage 1, Cannondale hard worked hard to set Elia Viviani up for a stage victory but the circuit in Aspen proved to be too hard for the Italian. Yesterday they finally got their win when Viviani won stage 4 in a bunch sprint.
To set up the sprint, however, Viviani and Cannondale had to bring back an amazingly strong Jens Voigt who was very clsoe to taking his big farewell win.
“I’m sorry, Jens," Viviani said. "He’s a legend of the breakaway. When I heard that only Jens was at the front, I knew it would be a hard effort to catch him. It’s a good win for me. I won here in 2011, and it’s a beautiful experience to win again.
"When we caught the guys in the breakaway, my teammates said it was only Jens in the front. Cameron Wurf and Alan Marangoni did perfect work on the final lap.
"In the first stage, we hoped for the sprint and we worked all day and came away with nothing. Today, I think we had the perfect tactic on the final lap, we did strong work to get our first victory in Colorado for Cannondale Pro Cycling.
"I took the last turn at the last kilometer in 10th position. I saw on the second stage that the Hincapie rider was fast, so I took his wheel. When he started with 300m, I was on his wheel, so it was perfect for me. My sprint is 200m, so when I saw 200m I went with maximum power."
