Elia Viviani finished his season with a third place in the omnium in the first World Cup which took place in Cali.
"I'm very happy because I scored another good haul of points for the Olympic rankings that now puts me into third in the world and first in Europe,” he told Tuttobiciweb. “The thought of victory has always been there and I tried, but I could not ask too much of my body, especially in the points race and then I decided to go for the podium. That specialty is my strong point, but of course I have to be in top form. In the race they attacked from all sides and while I responded well at the European Championships, I did not have it in Cali. Kluge and Manakov escaped and it was in that moment that I decided to defend the third place in the sprints. I have to admit that I did not feel brilliant.
"I was good in the scratch race with a nice fourth place in a race where losing points is really a matter of moments. I am satisfied with sixth place in the individual pursuit. I think I've defended myself better. In the elimination race I was second behind France, and for the overall omnium the result was good. In kilometre time trial it went wrong and I lost many positions. In this event I need to improve. I know that. But I continued the positive trend in flying lap: second place allowed me to take me to the top of the overall before the points race. "
