Olot City Council and the organizers of the Volta Ciclista a Catalunya have agreed that the Volta will return to the city. Mayor Josep M. Corominas and President of the "Volta", Ruben Peris, have agreed that the race will arrive in the city on March 22 next year at the end of the 2nd stage of the 96th edition of the race.
2016 will be the eighth time the capital of the Garrotxa will welcome the race which first visited it in 1920 when it hosted the 1st stage and the start of the second stage of the fourth edition of the Volta. The French rider Joseph Pelletier won the stage and the overall.
Throughout the years, Fermin Trueba (1941), Delio Rodriguez (1942), Roberto Pogiali (1965), Ludo Peeters (1983), Marino Alonso (1987) and Laurent Jalabert (1995) who also became the overall winner of the event in the same year, have won in the city. In 2015, the Volta returned to Olot, a town with great cycling tradition. On March 24, Alejandro Valverde (Movistar) was the winner of the second stage.
More than 190 participants from 24 teams have participated in the last two editions if the Volta Ciclista a Catalunya. In 2016, the best riders will again race in the Spanish region whose race has been held since 1911.
