While Cesare Benedetti spent the past two days in the lead group, it was Scott Thwaites, who represented BORA – ARGON 18 in the breakaway of the fourth stage of the Tour of Alberta.
The 25-year-old British rider attacked with two escape companions shortly after the start and he was able to hold up at the top until the 10 kilometers to go mark.
On the final ascent to the Marmot Basin Ski Resort the favorite teams of the race set a fast pace. At the same time many attacks led to a selection in the field. Finally, only a small group of less than 30 riders remained, which also included Paul Voss and Jan Barta of BORA – ARGON 18. Voss competed with the best climbers until the finale and with the 9th place he improved to the 7th place in the overall standings. Like yesterday, Tom-Jelte Slagter (Cannondale-Garmin) won the stage ahead of Bauke Mollema (Trek), who defended his leader's jersey.
Christian Pömer, Sport Director of BORA – ARGON 18, comments the stage: "Today we presented ourselves very well again. Paul was able to keep up with the best climbers at the challenging final climb. He finished in a great ninth place at the end, thus even improving in the overall standings, where we absolutely wanted to keep our Top10 position. It was quite a strong performance by Paul, given that he rather belongs to the allrounders than to the climbing specialists.
"Scott was part of the group of the day until 10 kilometers from the finish, and he has thus once again proved that BORA – Argon 18 is the most aggressive team of the Tour of Alberta. In today’s improved weather conditions, the rest of the team was able to save some energy with regards to tomorrow's flat stage."
