Omar Fraile (Caja Rural-RGA) is one of the professionals invited to the Taiwan KOM (King of Mountain) Challenge while will be held on Friday.It's 87 kilometers of climbing, with ramps of 27%, culminating at an altitude of 3275 meters. The winner will receive 28,000 euros.
The Taiwan KOM Challenge is a non-professional event which is part of the fourth edition of the Taiwan Cycling Festival. This particular race starts from sea level in Qixingtan, Hualian, on the east coast of Taiwan in the Pacific Ocean and ends at 3275 meters at the summit of Mount Hehuan, Wuling, the highest peak in the country that can be accessed by a road.
Fraile, winner of the mountains jersey in the Vuelta with Caja Rural-RGA and future Team Dimension Data rider, is one of the participants and he is ready for the unique challenge in the world. The total distance is 105 kilometers and the first 18.1km are neutralized before tackling the ascent of 87km. The average gradient is around 5% in the first 80 kilometers and the climb gets harder in the end, with 10% gradients and a wall of 27% The route crosses Taroko Gorge, a rock formation and passes tunnels and spectacular temples.
The race is held on Friday and starts at 6:30 am local time. The record was set by Iranian Rhamin Emami at 3:26:59 in 2013 while John Ebsen won in 2012, 3:27:25, and last year, 3:40:05. The temperature is another key factor. It can be around 15 degrees one day and below ten on a rainy or foggy day.
The prize for the winner is good, one million Taiwan dollars, 28,000 euros. There will be 14,000 for the runner-up and nearly 3,000 for the third rider across the line while the first woman will receive 6,000 euros.
Fraile not be the only professional as he will be accompanied by local hero Chun-Kai Feng (Lampre-Merida), Olympic gold medallist Lasse Norman Hansen (Cannondale-Garmin) who will ride for the ONE Pro Cycling next season, and John Ebsen (Androni), two-time winner of this event. There will be around 600 riders from 32 countries.
"I've never done such as high mountain and we'll see how it goes. I think one of the good wheels to follow is the one of Chun-Kai Feng and I look forward to the challenge," Fraile said at the official presentation. "I think the first part will be very fast and the end is the hardest with ramps up to 27%."
