Today Paris-Tours, is the last cycling classic of the season. Last year Jelle Wallays (Topsport Vlaanderen) took a surprise win. "The way I won that race was beautiful. I still get goosebumps."
Jelle Wallays surprised Thomas Voeckler in the two-rider sprint at Paris-Tours. "I have not looked much at the photos but when I look back, I still get goosebumps," he told Sporza.
"The way I won that race was beautiful. But I'm not justgoing to win again on Sunday. I will be watched and we have to wait and see what the weather will be like.
"I have won Paris-Tours both as a U23 and as a pro. Not many can say that."
Wallays also won Dwars door Vlaanderen in the spring.
"I guess I have the killer instinct. Not many breakaways make it but apparently I know how to do it. But I do feel that they no longer just let me go.
Wallays will leave Topsport Vlaanderen-Baloise and join Lotto Soudal.
"Topsport Vlaanderen was an ideal team to make progress. The atmosphere will probably never be the same. We were all Flemish and there was always plenty of atmosphere which is quite different from Lotto Soudal."
Wallays is happy to join a WorldTour team.
"Lotto Soudal has confidence in me. I hope I can make progress. In the spring classics, I will get a free role. In other races, I will particularly help sprinters in our team. I feel strong enough to ride in front of the pack."
Asked what race he wants to win next season, Wallays doesn't hesitate.
"The E3 Harelbeke. It is a race of a slightly higher level than Dwars door Vlaanderen, but not a top classic. If I win that race, it would mean that I have taken another step."
