Mark McNally (1989, Madison Genesis) is the ninth signing of Wanty-Groupe Gobert for next season.
The Briton has been riding for Team Halfords (2009), An Post-Sean Kelly (2010-2014) and Genesis Madison (2015). This year, he was third in the GP Jef Scherens - Rondom Leuven and tenth in the GP Stad Zottegem, and won the mountains jersey at the Tour of Britain. He has a track background and was close to joining Europcar a few years ago.
The team haven't confirmed the signing but McNally has talked about his move in an interview with CyclingWeekly.
“I’ve ridden a Belgian-heavy programme for a number of years, I know the races, I can speak the language,” McNally told Cycling Weekly.
“One of Wanty – Groupe Gobert’s managers contacted [Madison-Genesis DS] Roger Hammond – they were looking for a British rider, and he put me forward.
“I’m made up. The deal has taken a while to get sorted but it’s been worth it.”
The team already has 19 Belgian riders. The new signings are Guillaume Martin, Björn Thurau (Bora-Argon 18), Dimitri Claeys (Vérandas Willems), Kenny Dehaes (Lotto Soudal), Thomas Degand (IAM Cycling), Robin Stenuit (stagiare), Gaëtan Bille (Vérandas Willems) and Antoine Demoitie (Wallonie-Bruxelles).
Marco Marcato, Roy Jans, Jérôme Baugnies, Kevin Van Melsen, Lander Seynaeve, Simone Antonini, Frederik Backaert and Tom Devriendt will continue with the team.
