Tomorrow ASO will reveal the course of the 104th Tour de France which will potentially have three Belgian teams at the start. "I think we have a good chance of a wildcard," says Hilaire Van der Schueren, sports director at Wanty-Groupe Gobert.
How many uphill finishes will we have in the Tour in 2017? And will there again be two time trial? Tomorrow we will know the answer during the Tour presentation.
A delegation of Wanty-Groupe Gobert will be among the guests and dreams aloud about a debut in the biggest cycling race in the world.
"In November we will have a meeting with Tour organizer ASO," sports director Hilaire Van der Schueren told Sporza."I think we have a good chance of a wildcard."
Why does Wanty-Groupe Gobert deservesa chance in the Tour de France?
"We are in the lead of the Europe Tour, which means we are the best ProContinental team," Van der Schueren said.
"With Gasparotto we have achieved an excellent victory in this year's World Tour (in the Amstel Gold Race). And we have also shown ourselves in the Dauphiné, the waiting room of the Tour de France.
"This year we were first reserve for the Tour. Now two teams disappear (IAM and Tinkoff) and there is only one new team (Bahrain) so there is a vacancy in the Tour."
Wanty-Groupe Gobert is already working to create a team for the race.
"With Guillaume Martin, we have the best French grand tour talent in the ranks," said Van der Schueren.
"We also have signed French neo pro Doubey and experienced Levarlet and we have attracted Offredo. In my head I have made a great team that can win in every Tour stage: in the sprints, time trials and in the mountains.
“With Gasparotto we have lost an important riders (to Bahrain-Merida). But we replace him by Van Keirsbulck and Vanspeybrouck.
"It is also nice that the Tour passes through Wallonia this year. Normally, they will even pass through Binche, the home of Wanty-Groupe Gobert. We won’t deliver a bad performance in the Tour de France."
"
If Wanty-Groupe Gobert do the Tour, the deceased Antoine Demoitié will be on their mind.
"Since March 27, my world has changed," said Van der Schueren. "Antoine had his birthday yesterday. The team still find it difficult to cope with it. We often talk about Antoine."
