As a Belgian team, Wanty faced one of their season highlights in last week's Eneco Tour. Despite an initial setback that saw them lose their leader Bjorn Leukemans due to illness, the team is pleased with its aggressive showing in the WorldTour race.
Wanty Groupe Gobert continued on the attacking mode in the second half of the Eneco Tour. Especially Laurens de Vreese was very active.
"I feel very good. I think I've done well this week. I really put myself in the spotlight."
In the stage to his native Geraardsbergen he even attacked in the final of the stage.
"It was a planned attack. Zdenek Stybar did it last year in the same fashion. Besides, I finished twice in the top ten on the Muur in the Eneco Tour. It is unfortunate that I did not get to win but they didn't allow Pavel Brutt, a guy for the overall, to ride away."
Kévin van Melsen also did well in front of his home crowd. In the sixth stage the peloton headed to his hometown Hombourg and Van Melsen was in the leading group that day.
"It was great. There were so many people who came to see me, even all the way to the Redoute. What an experience to be in the breakaway with Tom Boonen in my own region."
In the final stage it was once again De Vreese who attacked.
"I was a little sick this morning but I tried to make the best of it. We all got carte blanche from Hilaire today. I knew that a large group could make it all the way to finish so I tried my all to be in it. " He finished sixth.
For De Vreese there is still an important objective coming up.
"Paris-Tours motivates me tremendously. I finished second there once. But there are wonderful races before that too. I need to recover first and hope that the sore throat will not continue to bother me. The GP Zottegem next Tuesday is my next race."
De Vreese was the best Wanty-Groupe Gobert rider in the overall at a 28th position He also was second in the ranking for most combatitive rider.
The team management was also satisfied after this tenth Eneco Tour.
"Despite the setback we had when Bjorn could not start, I do feel happy. We finished sixth twice, with Jans and De Vreese, and once ninth with Jans again. I've seen good things. The sponsor is satisfied because we took a lot of publicity," concludes Hilaire Vander Schueren.
