Ramon Sinkeldam finished eighth in Germany’s only WorldTour race, the Vattenfall Cyclassics in Hamburg. The mass sprint was won by Andre Greipel (Lotto Soudal) ahead of Alexander Kristoff (Team Katusha) and Giacomo Nizzolo (Trek Factory Racing).
Giant-Alpecin held itself in the peloton in northern Germany, as a four-man group stayed away much of the day. Marcel Kittel, continuing his return after missing much of the season due to a virus, finally lost contact on the third climb of the Waseberg.
A crash in the closing kilometers took out several riders and held up others, but Giant-Alpecin still had four riders ahead, with Sinkeldam taking a top ten finish.
Coach Rudi Kemna said:
“Our plan was to control the race and sprint with Marcel. The race went well. Tobias [Ludvigsson] made a strong impression with his support on the last climb of the Waseberg.
“Unfortunately Marcel dropped on the last time up the Waseberg. We prepared the sprint for Ramon with 5 riders. The positioning was good and he took 8th.”
