Yesterday it was announced that Tim Wellens has been selected for the Belgian Worlds team. Having recently won the Eneco Tour, the young Lotto Belisol rider is not surprised to have made the cut.
Yesterday the Belgian federal coach Carlo Bomans announced his selection of nine riders for the World Championships men's road race on Sunday the 28th of September. Lotto Belisol riders Jelle Vanendert and Tim Wellens are part of it. Both rode the Canadian WorldTour races. Wellens reacted on his selection when he returned home today.
"During the team presentation we all had to tell our dream for the season, for me that was getting selected for Ponferrada," he said. "So I'm very satisfied. The selection didn't come as a surprise because the course suits me, it's tough, and I deserve it because of my performances this season. Before my victory in the Eneco Tour I already had a positive talk with Carlo Bomans. And also in the races before I showed myself, like the Giro.
"I will further discuss my exact role with the federal coach. I will probably be one of the guys to join breakaways in the final. I just got back from Canada. The legs felt really good there. In Québec I attacked too early and in Montréal I rode for Tony Gallopin in the final. Also on training before we travelled to Canada I felt better than ever, it all goes easier. At the World Championships all Belgians are teammates, but it's nice Jelle is selected as well."
