Caleb Ewan started his 2016 season well with two stage wins at the Tour Down Under. Despit his good condition, he won't be present at Milano-San Remo. Indeed, Orica GreenEDGE sport director Matthew White explained that he is too young to handle the rigors of the nearly 300km classic. But he hopes to see him at the Giro d'Italia in May.

"It’s too early for him to do San Remo. Besides, we have the favorite with ‘Bling,’" White told Velonews, referring to Michael Matthews who crossed the finish line third last year. "That’s why we left him out of this race last year, because he wasn’t ready. The Giro is the big goal for the spring."

With his great performance at the Tour Down Under, he is confident for the rest of the season. "It gives me confidence to see the team working for me. I can’t wait for the rest of the season."

His teammate Simon Gerrans, who won the overall classification, described him in glowing terms. "Caleb is a big talent, and you could see he is very savvy for a young rider. He’s earned his right to be here. I’m excited to see what he can do the next few seasons."

"I know there were not the best four or five top sprinters here. I cannot wait to race against them," Ewan added. "The Tour Down Under is too hard now for them to come all the way down here. There are only two opportunities for sprints, so maybe in the future, they can give us sprinters more chances, and we will see bigger names."
