British Cycling has announced a pre-selection for the upcoming World Championships in Ponferrada, and while Mark Cavendish is the biggest name missing from the fourteen-man long-list for road race, the prospect of having Team Sky team-mates Bradley Wiggins and Chris Froome reunited under the GB banner appears to be far more interesting.
“I’m pleased with the long-list of riders we have selected for the UCI Road World Championships, and we’re fortunate to have a strong pool of riders from which to make our final selection,” said British Cycling’s Shane Sutton.
Great Britain is allowed to line-up at the World Championships road race, held in Spanish Ponferrada on the 28th of September with an eight-man roster. The final choice will be made from the long-list announced this week, consisting of Steve Cummings, Alex Dowsett, Andy Fenn, Chris Froome, Pete Kennaugh, David Millar, Luke Rowe, Ian Stannard, Ben Swift, Geraint Thomas, Scott Thwaites, Bradley Wiggins, Adam Yates and Simon Yates.
Arguably Mark Cavendish is the biggest name missing from the list, due to both the nature of the course and his disposition affected by a crash he suffered in the Tour de France opening stage.
In addition to this, two British riders will contest the individual time trial on September 24th, with Alex Dowsett, Steve Cummings, Geraint Thomas and Bradley Wiggins making the pre-selection.
The final selection for the UCI Road World Championships will be announced at a later date.
